New Orleans is one of the most distinct cities in the country: French and Spanish colonial architecture, live jazz spilling out of open doorways, and a food scene that's part of daily life, not just a night out. For Tulane students, it's a total change of pace from campus, an entire city built around walking, music, and slowing down to eat well.
Right now, that means beignets at Café du Monde, live jazz on Frenchmen Street and at Preservation Hall, dinner at newer favorites like Saba or Turkey and the Wolf, and sunset at Audubon Park under the oaks.
Baton Rouge is Louisiana's capital and LSU's hometown: equal parts government city and classic Southern college town, with a downtown that comes alive on weekends and a stretch of live oaks around the LSU Lakes that never really empties out. For LSU students, it's the rare college town where gameday energy and everyday life blend together.
Right now, that means Southern food and a packed patio at The Chimes, live music at the Varsity Theatre or a Thursday blues jam at Phil Brady's, a run or sunset walk around the LSU Lakes, and an afternoon at Perkins Rowe.
Tuscaloosa is built around the University of Alabama, small enough to feel like a real hometown, with a football culture that shapes the whole city's calendar. Outside of gamedays, it's a town of backyard breweries, barbecue joints that have been around for decades, and a riverfront that's quietly become one of its best hangouts.
Right now, that means ribs at Dreamland Bar-B-Que, a night out at Two Dimes (the Strip's buzziest new opening) or Black Warrior Brewing Company, a walk along the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, and Saturday mornings at the Tuscaloosa Farmers Market.
